Improved electromagnetic wave absorption at the high-frequency 5G band in GaxFe2-xO3@Ti3C2Tx MXene-TPU composites

With the advancement in future mobility, the utilization of 5G communication technology is ever increasing. Here, it is important to ensure reliable communication without electromagnetic interference (EMI), where malfunction can lead to serious consequences. Thus, there is a need to develop EM wave absorbers in the 5G band for safe operation. In this study, we developed a 5G band EM wave absorber based on a polymer composite embedded with magnetic material/MXene hybrids. Specifically, Ga-doped epsilon iron oxide nanoparticles were functionalized on the surface of Ti3C2Tx MXene, subsequently mixed with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Synergetic effects caused by magnetic and dielectric loss in the composite improve EM wave absorption at 77 GHz, while the flexibility and lightweight of polymeric composites offer additional benefits. This approach provides a promising strategy for developing EM wave absorber tailored for next-generation radar in autonomous vehicles.
