Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are smart soft materials capable of programmable deformation and shape recovery in response to stimuli such as temperature or light. This talk presents two applications using 3D/4D-printed SMP microstructures for adaptive surface and biomedical technology. The first case introduces a hook-and-loop fastener inspired by plant diaspores, featuring temperature-dependent bonding strength and on-demand detachment. The fastener, fabricated using PμSL and molding, demonstrates robust adhesion at room temperature and low separation force above the glass transition temperature. The second case involves an octopus-inspired microneedle patch designed for safe drug delivery. The patch enables strong skin adhesion and easy, controlled detachment in response to thermal stimulation. These studies highlight the potential of SMP-based 4D printed systems in developing programmable and functional solutions to engineering problems in industrial and biomedical applications.
