The monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is becoming increasingly critical in various fields, including air quality management, and health and safety. Among VOCs, toluene induces neurotoxic effects upon prolonged exposure, even at low concentrations. Herein, we present a flexible capacitive toluene sensor based on conductive textile electrodes and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dielectric layer. Capacitance changes are sensitively governed by swelling behavior and dielectric constant variations of the PDMS layer upon VOC absorption. Theoretical predictions based on the Bruggeman theory showed good agreement with experimental results. The sensor exhibited excellent selectivity to toluene across a wide concentration range, with a fast response time and high durability, maintaining performance over 10000 bending cycles. This study demonstrates the potential of textile-based sensors for real-time, low-cost, and energy-efficient toluene monitoring in wearable applications.
