Colorimetric and Fluorometric Ammonia Sensors Based on Pyridinuim Ion-Containing Polydiacetylenes

Owing to the stimulus-induced colorimetric and fluorometric changes, polydiacetylens (PDAs) have been extensively investigated as sensor materials. PDA can be readily prepared by photopolymerization of self-assembled diacetylene (DA)monomers. This study focused on the development of colorimetric and fluorometric ammonia sensor using pyridininum ion-functionalized PDAs. The effect of nitrogen atom position (ortho, meta and para) on the sensing performance was also evaluated. Exposure to ammonia afforded both color and fluorescence changes of the polymers and the para-substituted pyridinium ion-containing PDA displayed the highest sensitivity against ammonia. Thus, a brilliant blue-to-red color transition and a red fluorescence generation was observed upon exposure to ammonia gas. The potential of the PDA sensor as a colorimetric indicator for monitoring of food spoilage was proved by observing a time-dependent blue-to-red color change with a meat sample.
