We newly synthesized a viologen-based reactive mesogen (ViRM) to develop polarization-dependent and electrochromic smart window. The uniaxially oriented and polymer-stabilized ViRM film was fabricated by shear-coating, self-assembly and photopolymerization. The ViRM film undergoes a color change through a reversible redox reaction of viologen by applying voltage. In addition, the ViRM film exhibits polarization-dependent transmittance because of the hierarchical lattice structure oriented along the shear direction (SD). This enables tunable transmittance by rotating the angle between the polarizing axis (PA) and SD using a linear polarizer. The developed ViRM film shows great possibilities not only in the field of smart windows but also multi-information encryption.
