Highly Selective Organic Gas Sensor via Surface-Functionalized MXene–Gas Interactions

Organic gas sensors are gaining attention for use in environmental monitoring and industrial safety due to their flexibility, light weight, and low-cost processing. However, their limited sensitivity has driven efforts to develop hybrid systems with functional materials to improve performance. MXene has emerged as a promising gas-active material due to its excellent conductivity and high surface functionalization potential. In this study, we enhanced the performance of organic gas sensors by blending surface-modified MXene with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). MXene was functionalized with amine and thiol groups using a simple silanization method. N-MXene exhibited the highest response to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), while S-MXene responded most strongly to sulfur dioxide (SO₂). Additionally, air stability tests showed that surface-functionalized MXene effectively suppressed charge trapping and oxidative reaction of the polymer film, significantly improving long-term air stability.
