The unique packing structure and solubility of Y-series nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) are effectively controlled by inner side chain engineering. In general, the branched side chains (e.g., 2-ethylhexyl, 2-butyloctyl, etc.) are precisely engineered in NFAs to effectively enhance solubility, maintaining the helical packing structure. However, the development of Y-series NFAs with linear inner side chains has been rarely reported, as their very low solubility makes unfavorable film formation. Herein, we introduce oleyl inner side chains of Y-series NFA, which contain a cis-configured double bond, leading to improved solubility induced by the kinked conformation of the inner chains. This unique modification strategy strengthens face-on molecular packing compared to other Y-series NFAs with linear inner side chains, resulting in a promising power conversion efficiency of up to 14%.
