Phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (PCNFs) possess distinctive properties such as flame retardancy, low-toxicity synthesis, and ionic conductivity, which have high potential for sustainable applications such as energy storage and metal ion adsorption. To design elaborate and high-performance of functional systems, a fundamental understanding of ion-mediated interactions between PCNFs is crucial. Herein, we investigate the interaction forces between PCNF surfaces in aqueous solutions containing Na⁺, Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺ cations measured by a surface forces apparatus (SFA). Notably, significant increases in interaction forces were observed under highly diluted conditions (~1 nM), regardless of ion valency. Additionally, as the ion concentration increased, the interaction forces initially rose but then sharply decreased beyond a critical ion concentration for each ion species. These findings provide constructive insights as to tailoring PCNFs in aqueous environments.
