Recently, interstitial fluid (ISF) has attracted attention in healthcare, medical and biomedical applications because it exists in the extracellular space and diffuses in the blood vessels, and ISF has a composition like that of blood. Due to various biomarkers in ISF, if we can extract ISF and use of them such as a biosensor to provide bio-information, we can provide useful health information to both clinicians and patients.
For effective ISF extraction, we developed a microneedle structure and used shape memory microneedle technology (INNOSELF-MN). We first designed a novel microneedle design including a hollow type of microneedle structure and a filled microneedle structure. Then, we set up a manufacturing process for microneedles with two shapes such as cone shape and x-shape using shape memory programming process and established a protocol for fluid extraction. Based on this study, we developed a shape memory microneedle capable of ISF extraction.
