Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is a cellulose derivative exhibiting cholesteric liquid crystalline phases capable of reflecting visible light through hydrogen bonding with water. Recent studies have investigated tuning structural coloration of HPC for sensor applications and its potential as ink for direct ink writing (DIW), though practical use remains limited by mechanical performance.
This study introduces poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a guest material to overcome this limitation. Adjusting the molecular weight and hydrolysis degree of PVA enabled full-spectrum color tuning and improved rheological properties for DIW. Additionally, kinetic trapping was employed to prevent color fading from water evaporation, effectively stabilizing structural colors. This research leverages the unique properties of PVA to significantly enhance the practicality and applicability of HPC-based structural coloration systems.
