Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are used in a variety of applications such as tapes, sticky notes, and labels. However, conventional commercial PSA materials are petroleum-based and non-degradable, resulting in substantial environmental challenges. Therefore, sustainable PSA alternatives with comparable adhesion performance are urgently needed. In this study, we developed polyurethane PSAs derived from a cardanol, a non-food chain byproduct of cashew nut shells that achieved strong adhesion without tackifiers or plasticizers. This performance was attributed to the bulky side chain moiety of cardanol combined with hydrogen bonding urethane linkages. Additionally, these adhesives showed rapid biodegradation under mild conditions, addressing adhesive residue issues in pulping and recycling operations. Overall, this study suggests that cardanol-based PU PSAs are a promising sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based PSAs.
