Electrophoretic Photonic Crystal Displays (EPDs) are reflective display technologies capable of tunable color modulation under applied electric fields. However, their practical application is limited by electrochemical instability. Here, we introduce phenylethylamine (PEA) as a promising alternative to conventional materials. PEA offers similar Lewis basicity to aniline but with lower toxicity, improved electrochemical stability, and reduced cost. Its favorable physical properties—including low viscosity, low melting point, and high boiling point—further enhance thermal and chemical stability. We develop a PEA-based color ink by dispersing low-refractive-index particles in a high-refractive-index medium, achieving enhanced color performance and low-voltage operation. This study demonstrates PEA’s potential as a next-generation material for energy-efficient reflective displays.
