This study analysed the quantitative correlation between chemical structure, surface properties and biodegradability of five cellulose derivatives. FT-IR analysis confirmed the unique chemical structure of each substituent and contact angle measurements showed that CAB (60.1°) was the lowest and CAP (79.3°) was the highest. CA showed the highest water absorption of 16%, while CAP showed the lowest of 6%. The starting pyrolysis temperature of the samples was around 280-300°C, with EC (279.4°C) being the lowest and CA (304.8°C) being the highest. In the biodegradability test based on ISO-14855, CAP showed the maximum weight change and property change after 5 weeks, and EC showed the minimum reduction of 7%, suggesting that the microstructure of the substituent groups can have a significant effect on the degradation rate. The results can be used for the design of cellulose-based bioplastics.
