Pyrolysis-Free Synthesis of PtO4 Single Atom Catalysts for Interfacial Synergistic Hydrogen Evolution

Various types of atomic catalysts based on pyrolysis methodologies have been explored thus far, aiming at superior electrocatalytic performance with high cost-efficiency. However, such performance enhancements are predominantly ascribed to the augmented electrical conductivity at the carbonized framework rather than the intrinsic activity of catalytic sites. In this work, we introduce a pyrolysis-free strategy by utilizing dopamine monomers as adhesive modules to anchor PtO4 catalytic sites on various 2D substrates. Taking advantage of these distinctive features, we experimentally verified the substrate-dependent noticeable variation in the characteristics of PtO4 sites, attributed to the electron redistribution driven by hetero-interfacial synergistic effects. Notably, the mass activity of PtO4 sites was enhanced by up to 63-fold through the judicious pairing with Ti3C2Tx MXene, highlighting the critical role of non-covalent interfacial engineering in catalytic performance.
