Midwave and longwave infrared optical systems are essential for high-resolution thermal imaging in low-light conditions. While traditionally used in defense applications, its adoption in automotive night vision systems is anticipated to increase, highlighting the need for affordable vehicular thermal cameras lens materials. This perspective highlights recent advances in using synthetic organic and hybrid polymers as emerging IR-transmissive materials.
In this research, we developed novel LWIR transparent polymers from elemental sulfur and organic comonomer via inverse vulcanization. Given its favorable infrared transmittance and processibility, it presents a promising alternative for future integration into automotive camera lenses in night vision systems.
