Plasmonic Mid-IR Sensing via Graphene Nanoribbons Fabricated Using Block Copolymer Patterns Aligned by Shear-Rolling process

The mid-infrared region enables identification of various biomolecular vibrations. However, its long wavelength results in low sensitivity when detecting single molecules. To overcome these limitations, plasmon-enhanced mid-IR sensing techniques have been developed. One promising approach for plasmonic mid-IR sensing is the use of graphene nanoribbons. Owing to their atomically thin structure, graphene nanoribbons confine the electric field effectively and their low carrier density allows tunability of the plasmonic frequency via external gating. A conventional method for fabricating graphene nanoribbons is e-beam lithography, which suffers from high cost and low throughput. In this study, we propose a scalable method to fabricate graphene nanoribbons using unidirectionally aligned block copolymer patterns. Especially, our shear-rolling process enables rapid, large-area, and highly oriented alignment of block copolymer patterns on graphene directly.
