Thermally Surface-Modified MXene/PDMS Composites with Low Filler Loading for Enhanced EMI Shielding

Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene has gained increasing attention for EMI shielding applications due to its high electrical conductivity and layered structure. However, its oxidation sensitivity significantly limits standalone use, necessitating incorporation into polymer matrices for improved thermal stability and processability. In addition, the strong hydrophilicity of MXene causes poor compatibility with hydrophobic polymers such as PDMS, thereby hindering effective composite formation. To overcome these issues, an aligned MXene foam was prepared via freeze casting and thermally treated to enhance surface hydrophobicity, enabling efficient PDMS infiltration and composite fabrication. The resulting MXene/PDMS composite exhibited excellent EMI shielding effectiveness exceeding 45 dB at a low filler loading (~3 wt%), attributed to the synergistic effects of filler alignment and interfacial bonding. This approach provides a simple and scalable strategy for developing polymer composites utilizing MXene.
