Growing global concern over plastic waste has led to increasing legislation, requiring a certain percentage of recycled plastic (r-plastic) to be contained in products. It is driving the need for certification system that verifies the contents of r-plastic. Fluorescent material is regarded as a promising marker for detecting the contents of recycled plastics in products, due to its non-destructive qualitative and quantitative analysis. Fluorescent marker, when designed to have high fluorescence, durability, and compatibility with matrix polymer, can enable the construction of a reliable certification system. In this study, various fluorescent materials were screened to identify key structural factors for a high-performance marker. Their optical and thermal stability was characterized. In addition, markers were embedded in polymer matrices to evaluate their compatibility and applicability. These findings provide insight into the molecular design for high-performance marker.
