Sensitive and selective methods for detecting Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in water are crucial for environmental monitoring. Although traditional methods are accurate and sensitive, they face challenges due to high cost, specialised equipment, and limited field use. In this study, we introduce a colourimetric sensing probe designed to detect Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in water. The probe uses enhanced chemical stability of silver nanoprisms achieved through Pd or Pt deposition. Our method shows low detection limits of 2.6 nM for Pd(II) and 0.3 nM for Pt(II), indicating high sensitivity. In addition, the probe is simple, low-cost, and works with both the naked eye and UV–Vis spectrophotometry, making it suitable for point-of-care use. Beyond detection, this method allows on-demand synthesis of bimetallic catalysts. The resulting Ag/Pd and Ag/Pt nanoprisms show potential for environmental remediation, offering a way to recycle and reuse Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in catalytic applications.
