N-Alkylamide-functionalized vinyl-addition polynorbornenes were synthesized via post-polymerization modification to enhance physical properties through interchain hydrogen bonding interactions. Ester-functionalized polynorbornenes were prepared as precursor polymers with varying ester contents via Pd(II)-catalyzed vinyl-addition copolymerization. The gradient monomer sequence was confirmed by determining the reactivity ratios. Precursor polymers were employed in organobase catalyzed amidation with alkylamines. The amidation efficiencies ranged from 70% to 90%. At low amide contents of approximately 10 mol%, tensile strength increased by 10 MPa due to interchain hydrogen bonding, while Tg was reduced by only about 20 ℃. Moreover, in the case of polymers functionalized with dodecyl amide, tensile toughness was improved by up to 2 times due to stress relaxation during tensile deformation and the reversible hydrogen bonding.
