Sustainable Thermoset Networks from Citric Acid for Enhanced Strength, Transparency, and Barrier Performance

Conventional thermosets are known for their durability and chemical resistance but suffer from environmental drawbacks due to their irreversible crosslinked networks. To overcome these limitations, we synthesized a bio-based thermosetting polymer using citric acid (CA), 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (CHDA), and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM). The resulting polyester network exhibits high tensile strength, excellent optical clarity, and superior gas barrier properties. Notably, the material retains the performance advantages of conventional thermosets while enabling both recyclability and complete biodegradation under composting conditions. This work presents a sustainable alternative that integrates high performance with end-of-life degradability, offering potential for use in automotive, electronics, and packaging applications.
