Quinoidal-Character Extension in Non-Fullerene Acceptors for Short-Wave Infrared Organic Photodetectors

Photodetectors convert light to electrical signals for applications in medical imaging, environmental monitoring, and imaging systems. Inorganic active layers remain constrained by cost, weight, and dark current, motivating organic semiconductors as alternatives. This synthesis-driven study develops non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) tailored for organic photodetectors. Guided by an A–D–A′–D–A (ADADA) architecture and a quinoidal-character-extension strategy, we tune donor–acceptor interactions to broaden absorption, and films show absorption onsets >1400 nm.
