Thermoplastic poly(ether-ester) elastomer(TPEE) is widely used in automotive and electronic applications due to its excellent flexibility and mechanical strength. With EU Ecolabel regulations increasing the required biomass content in plastics from 20% to over 40%, demand is rising for high-performance elastomers derived from renewable resources.
In this study, a bio-based TPEE was synthesized using poly(neopentyl glycol 2,5-furandicarboxylate)(PNF), obtained from the bio-based monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA) and neopentyl glycol. PNF was used as the hard segment, and poly(trimethylene ether) glycol(PO3G) as the soft segment, with PO3G contents of 3, 5, and 10 mol%. Mechanical testing confirmed high Young’s modulus and excellent elongation at break. These results suggest the potential of a high-performance TPEE that simultaneously achieves stiffness and flexibility, unlike conventional elastomers that typically trade off one for the other.
