Fabrication Strategy to Improve Thermal Stability of Polyimide-Based CFRP through Nanoconfinement Effects using CNT Networks

 Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are utilized in aerospace applications owing to their excellent mechanical properties and lightweight. However, their use in high-temperature environments is limited due to low thermal stability of conventional polymer matrix. In this study, Polyimide (PI) resin, one of representative polymers with outstanding thermal resistance, was introduced as a matrix to address this limitation. In addition, a carbon nanotube (CNT) network was incorporated as a functional nanostructure that improves thermal resistance. Polymer chains infiltrate the CNT network, and their mobility is restricted by its porous structure, which results in a nanoconfinement effect. The optimal CNT content that maximizes the nanoconfinement effect was identified based on structural observations and thermal analysis. The corresponding thermal properties were evaluated to confirm enhanced heat resistance.
