Hydrocarbon-based proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are susceptible to mechanical degradation caused by water-induced swelling during fuel cell operation, which can lead to performance deterioration. Therefore, controlling excessive swelling is a critical focus in the development of hydrocarbon-based PEMs. In this study, membranes were fabricated by blending sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with cellulose acetate and crosslinking with sulfosuccinic acid, resulting in improved dimensional stability and mechanical integrity. Additionally, the sulfonic acid groups in sulfosuccinic acid are expected to enhance proton conductivity across a wide range of humidity conditions.
