We investigated the structure–property relationships of fluorinated and non-fluorinated polyimide (PI) films. A non-fluorinated PI synthesized from an alicyclic dianhydride and an aromatic diamine exhibited high transmittance (>88%), low yellowness index (YI < 1.3), and low haze (<0.3%). It also showed good mechanical properties (Young’s modulus of 5.2 GPa, tensile strength of 166 MPa) and excellent folding durability, withstanding over 1,000,000 folding cycles at a 1.5 mm bending radius. In contrast, the fluorinated PI containing CF₃-Substituted aromatics demonstrated a higher modulus (>8 GPa) but reduced optical quality (YI > 2.5) and lower folding reliability (<500,000 cycles). Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the enhanced folding reliability of the non-fluorinated PI is due to higher energy dissipation, indicated by elevated loss modulus. These results underscore the potential of alicyclic-based non-fluorinated PIs for next-generation flexible displays and electronics.
