ZnSeTe has garnered great attention as a Cd- and Pb-free quantum dots emitting pure blue region (λ_em=~450 nm). However, the unavoidable use of Te, which is potentially toxic to the human liver and kidneys, remains a challenge. In this study, we developed ZnSe/ZnMgSe core/shell QDs using a compositionally graded ZnMgSe shell to achieve pure blue emission without the need for Te. The gradient shell design effectively passivated the core/shell interface, leading to reduction in interfacial defects, thus reducing the non-radiative decay as confirmed by time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. The correlation between the ZnMgSe composition and the optical properties of the QDs was studied. As a proof of concept, QLEDs were fabricated employing the ZnSe/ZnMgSe QDs. The influence of gradient shell composition on device performance was studied. This study suggests the potential of Te-free ZnSe-based QDs as environmentally and efficient emitters for blue QLED applications.
