For solvation of Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in various solvents, CNT surface modification is important with modulation of CNT-liquid interfaces. Here, we present a simple and rapid surface modification process with no structural damage and defect formation, mediated by microwave treatments with combinatorial solvents. When CNTs are mixed with solvent mixtures, short microwave irradiation leads to hotspot-mediated production of various radicals. Along with hydrogen peroxides to catalyze radical formation, immediate radical chemisorption is followed. In this manner, uniform CNT dispersions with no CNT aggregation can be fabricated due to the strong charge attraction between electron donating groups and electron withdrawing groups in CNTs and solvents.
