The recent increase in demand for wearable devices has prompted a growing need for sustainable power supply systems. Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs), such as those activated by pressure or bending, have attracted attention. However, most PENGs currently rely on synthetic or inorganic materials that lack biocompatibility. This study used silk fibroin (SF), a natural protein, to address this issue.
SF is renowned for its excellent mechanical strength, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, and SF has a non-centrosymmetric molecular structure, making it suitable for piezoelectric applications. The piezoelectric performance was enhanced by controlling crystallinity and molecular orientation through variations in concentration, temperature, processing, and post-treatment. These adjustments could maximise sensitivity and output. The resulting system demonstrated improved performance and potential as a sustainable power solution for wearable electronics.
