Silicon Anode based Stretchable Battery Enabled by PVDF-OH Binder

To develop stretchable batteries for wearable electronics, we synthesized PVDF-OH by introducing hydroxyl groups into PVDF via Fenton reaction. Silicon anodes offer high capacity but suffer from volume expansion, causing mechanical failure. Conventional PVDF binders lack elasticity and adhesion to accommodate this stress. The hydroxyl groups in PVDF-OH introduce hydrogen bonds with silanol groups on silicon, enhancing interfacial stability. Additionally, reversible hydrogen bonding between PVDF-OH chains contributes to the stretchability.

Electrodes made with PVDF-OH binder and silicon nanoparticles retained over 80% of capacity after more than 50 cycles. The binder maintained structural integrity under repeated cycles, showing promise for stretchable battery applications. This study demonstrates that introducing hydrogen-bonding functionality into polymer binders can improve both electrochemical performance and mechanical durability in silicon-based stretchable batteries.
