Ion–Dipole Induced Polymer Electrolytes for Enhanced Ion Transport and Dendrite Suppression in LMBs

To address key challenges in lithium-metal batteries (LMBs), such as dendrite growth and interfacial instability, we developed a composite elastomer electrolyte (CEE) via one-step UV polymerization with a multiple-bridge design. The CEE consists of a nitrile monomer (FN), a hydrogen-bonding monomer (BACOEA), a deep-eutectic solvent (SN/LiTFSI), and Al₂O₃ nanowires. Ion–dipole interactions between Li⁺ and –CN groups, along with hydrogen bonding to TFSI⁻, enhance selective Li⁺ transport, yielding a high lithium-ion transference number (tLi⁺ = 0.72) and ionic conductivity (1.7 × 10⁻³ S cm⁻¹). The nanowire-reinforced matrix improves mechanical strength, contributing to dendrite suppression. Furthermore, using the CEE as both electrolyte and binder, composite elastomer cathodes (CECs) were fabricated, exhibiting improved interfacial contact and stable cycling in Li∥LFP full cells. This strategy offers a promising direction for enhancing safety and performance in next-generation LMBs.
