The vanillin is a strong candidate for bio-based monomer which can have high thermal stability due to its rigid aromatic structure derived from lignin. The divanillin as an aromatic monomer was synthesized from vanillin through oxidative coupling with Iron sulfate. The divanillin was polymerized with pentaerythritol under acidic condition to generate amorphous poly (spiro-acetal) structure. The chemical structure of poly(divanillyl spiro-acetal) (PDVSA) was confirmed by 1H-NMR and FTIR. The thermal properties were investigated by DSC and TGA. The data shows no melting temperature and glass transition temperature of PDVSA and Td5% was 220 °C and 380 °C respectively.
