Durability Improvement of PEMFC Membranes Using Cerium-Based Radical Scavenger Layer

Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes used in PEMFCs suffer from radical-induced chemical degradation, especially under low humidity. To improve durability, a Ce-based radical scavenger(Ce-RS) was incorporated into the multilayer membrane. This Ce-RS layer effectively mitigates chemical degradation by intercepting reactive radicals such as •OH and •H.
This multilayer membrane enhanced wtaer uptake, improved thermal properties, and approximately threefold higher durability, maintaining stable operation for over 2000 hours under low-humidity OCV conditions. This strategy offers a promising approach for extending PEMFC membrane durability, and provides valuable insights for the design of membranes suitable for harsh operating environments.
