Enhancing Colloidal Quantum Dot Photovoltaics through Organic-Soluble MXene Integration

While colloidal quantum dot (CQD) photovoltaics have seen significant progress, several challenges still prevent further performance gains. A key issue is the Fermi level mismatch between the photoactive and hole-transporting layers, which hinders efficient charge collection. Furthermore, surface cracks in the hole-transporting layer can lead to direct contact between the active material and the metal electrode, compromising both device efficiency and stability.

To tackle these problems, we developed a polycatechol-functionalized MXene (PCA-MXene) that acts as both a dopant and an interlayer for CQD solar cells.



By uniformly dispersing PCA-MXene and CQDs in a butylamine solvent, we successfully tuned the work function and energy band alignment of the CQDs, which dramatically improved hole extraction. Moreover, the PCA-MXene interlayer effectively seals the tiny cracks in the hole-transporting layer, preventing metal electrode penetration and moisture intrusion.
