Polyelectrolyte Multilayers on Anodes for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to the abundance of zinc and the inherent safety of aqueous electrolytes. However, direct contact between the Zn anode and electrolyte often leads to dendritic growth and parasitic reactions, ultimately limiting cycle life. In this study, we report a strategy to stabilize the Zn anode via the application of polyelectrolyte multilayer coatings using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. The LbL coatings facilitate Zn²⁺ ion diffusion and significantly lower the nucleation overpotential, thereby effectively suppressing dendrite formation. Furthermore, the coatings provide both ionic and electronic conductivity, contributing to enhanced electrochemical performance. This eco-friendly and scalable approach offers a viable route to improving the energy density and cycling stability of AZIBs, advancing their potential for industrial deployment.
