Cataract-induced opaque eyes are still treated with physical surgery, such as the implantation of Intraocular lens (IOL). After surgery, Lens epithelial cells (LECs) remaining within the lens capsule proliferate and differentiate along the IOL surface, causing Posterior capsule opacification (PCO). PCO is a common condition, with an incidence of up to 50% within five years. To prevent this problem, early inhibition of LECs adhesion is crucial.
To reduce LECs adhesion, we performed surface modification of hydrophobic IOL material using the SBMA, one of the zwitterionic polymers, via photo-polymerization. The IOL surface with SBMA exhibited excellent hydrophilicity and suppress adhesion of protein and LECs.
