Short wave infrared (SWIR) image sensing is attracting lots of interests from industrial, automotive and even consumer application with advantages of eye-safety, material differenciation, less interference from ambiant light etc. Currently, mainstream SWIR image sensors are based on InGaAs and Ge photodiode. However, these technologies are suffering from high production cost and high dark current respectibly. Meanwhile, considerable research has been conducted on colloidal quantum dot (CQD) based SWIR image sensing to enable low cost, hight performance imaging. This presentation introduces recent advances in thin-film CQD photodiode-based image sensor technologies. The current main stream SWIR technologies will be introduced briefly with their advantages and limitations. Then, the fundamentals of thin-film CQD photodiode based SWIR imaging will be discussed, with an emphasis on image sensor design and fabrication. Furthermore, current limitations of CQD thin-film photodiode-based technologies will be addressed, along with emerging approaches to overcome these challenges.
