Abstract
Despite wide commercial success, the applications of polyolefins (POs) are often limited by their lack of functionality, polarity, and structural diversity. In this presentation, a technology platform for the functionalization of POs through post-polymerization modification is introduced. The C–H insertion capability of nitrene intermediates has garnered significant interest due to its broad applicability to organic macromolecules containing C–H bonds. Sulfonyl azide- and azidoformate-containing reagents have been prepared to modify commercial-grade POs via a simple melt-processing method. Non-catalytic C–H insertion by nitrene intermediates is also employed to fabricate polymer–inorganic hybrid materials with enhanced elasticity and adhesion properties. This technology platform offers scalable and viable pathways to broaden the utility of industrially significant POs by leveraging readily available resources.
