Mechanotransducing Organic Electrochemical Diode for Crosstalk-inhibited Artificial Skin

Abstract

High-resolution deformable artificial skin emulating human tactility is essential for interactive robotics, prosthetics, and wearable electronics. Although recent developments in stretchable transistors and diodes have mitigated electrical crosstalk, persistent challenges remain to simultaneously satisfy large deformability, structural simplicity, and tactile signal fidelity. We unify the diode functionality and mechanotransduction into an organic electrochemical diode. The diode operates through ion-hole coupling in the organic semiconductor, while mechanical deformation is transduced into strain-dependent impedance changes. The diode exhibits a rectification ratio of 5 × 10² at 10² Hz—more than an order of magnitude higher than previously reported ionic diodes in rectification ratio and operating frequency. This unified approach enables the direct fabrication of crosstalk-resistant ion-electronic skin, achieving accurate strain/pressure mapping.
