Multi-functional Structural Supercapacitor CFRP with NiCo2O4

Abstract

The multifunctional composite as both a structural supercapacitor and a self-sensing sensor was devised in this study. NiCo2O4 nanowires was integrated on the carbon fiber fabric to boost electrochemical performance and sensing, with an ionic liquid as the electrolyte. This design enables simultaneous energy storage and real-time structural integrity monitoring. The NiCo2O4 nanowires provide high surface area and excellent electrical conductivity, crucial for efficient charge storage and sensitive strain detection. The ionic liquid ensures stable electrochemical cycling and contributes to the composite's mechanical properties. This research demonstrates the successful integration of energy storage and sensing functionalities within a single material. This novel approach offers significant potential for lightweight, high-performance applications in aerospace, automotive, and wearable electronics, where space and weight are critical.
