Abstract

Organic fluorescent dyes are widely used in various fields such as life science. Since they are not suitable for high-sensitivity detection and real-time monitoring, strategies for doping organic dyes into inorganic materials are being actively studied. Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) are promising for fluorescent doping due to their high chemical stability, biocompatibility, and ease of surface modification. In this study, we developed an amphiphilic fluorescent probe based on SNPs by the following procedure. Silica-wax colloidosomes were prepared by forming a Pickering emulsion of water, wax, and SNPs, and the exposed surface was selectively modified through a silane coupling reaction using APTES. After removing the wax, the bare side was modified with GPTMS. The APTES-modified Janus particles were stained with FITC, and the GPTMS-modified surface was stained with rhodamine B hydrazide. This fluorescent probe exhibited different colors of fluorescence in basic and acidic environments.
