Abstract

Traditional wound closure methods like sutures, staples, and tape can cause infections and complications. Tissue adhesives offer speed and ease but set within 10 seconds, limiting precise application control. This study mimics sandcastle worms' adhesive mechanism, where protein glue stored in granules bursts when exposed to seawater electrolytes, activating adhesion. Researchers developed nano-sized particles using alginate (anionic polymer) and Dermabond (cyanoacrylate adhesive). Cationic polymers including polyethyleneimine, chitosan, and PDADMAC serve as triggers to activate adhesive properties. This nanoparticle platform enables precise tissue adhesive control through low viscosity for accurate application and timed activation. The system offers broad application potential for various wounds, including ocular and abdominal cavities, overcoming rapid-setting limitations of conventional adhesives.
