Mechanochromic Auxetic Photonic Pattern for Simultaneous Analysis of Deformation Direction and Strain

Abstract

Elastic photonic crystals, composed of non-closed colloidal arrays embedded in elastic matrices, exhibit mechanochromism; however, the extent of colloidal deformation inherently limits their color-change sensitivity. Fractal cut patterns with regular cut structures expand under strain by twisting their skeletons, thereby amplifying local deformation within the cut regions. In this study, we constructed cut regions using elastic photonic crystals and skeleton regions using urethane, enabling large color changes with minimal deformation. As a result, the system achieved an ultrahigh sensitivity of up to 60 nm/%—approximately 20 times higher than that of bulk films. Furthermore, by analyzing colorimetric changes under multidirectional deformations, we established a platform capable of simultaneously determining both deformation magnitude and direction. This auxetic photonic pattern offers potential for applications in structural health monitoring and mechanochromic sensing.
