Semi-Interpenetrating Polyimide-Acrylamide Glycol Gel with Tunable Thermomechanical Properties for Shape-Deformable Display Substrates

Abstract

This study presents a semi-interpenetrating network (Semi-IPN) glycol gel by incorporating polyimide into an acrylamide-based matrix. While polyimide is widely used as a display substrate for its excellent thermal and chemical stability, its rigidity limits its application in next-generation displays that require stretchability and freeform deformation. To overcome this limitation, the Semi-IPN structure combines the flexibility of acrylamide gel with the mechanical strength of polyimide, improving mechanical durability and enabling precise tuning of thermomechanical properties, including the glass transition temperature (Tg). By optimizing polyamic acid (PAA) concentration and UV curing conditions, tunable transparency, stretchability, and Tg in the range of 150–200°C are achieved. The developed Semi-IPN glycol gel shows promising potential as a flexible and reliable substrate for next-generation shape-deformable displays.
