Electrochromic devices with intensity-tunable color reflection enabled by chiral liquid crystal films

Abstract

We demonstrate an intensity-tunable color reflective display based on electrochromic devices (ECDs) incorporating a patterned color reflector. The reflector is fabricated by spin-coating a chiral reactive mesogenic mixture onto the bottom substrate of the ECD, followed by photolithographic patterning. An indium–tin–oxide (ITO) anode is subsequently deposited on the reflector. The ECDs are further integrated with a tungsten oxide/ITO cathode and an electrolyte containing propylene carbonate, lithium perchlorate, and ferrocene. The device exhibits structural colors originating from the reflector, with high reflectivity exceeding 40% in the pristine state, and continuous tuning of color depth is achieved upon voltage application. Our approach of integrating color reflectors into ECDs is suitable for applications in color reflective displays, digital signage, and smart windows.
