Abstract

Quantum dots (QDs) have optical properties such as high quantum efficiency and good photostability. Research is ongoing to utilize these properties in the field of biosensors. Most quantum dots have hydrophobic surfaces, which limit their dispersion and functionality in the bioenvironment. In this work, we designed water-dispersible QDs by exchanging the surface ligands (Oleic acid) of hydrophobic (CdSe/Cd0.5Zn0.5S) Qds with a hydrophilic ligand, dihydrolipoic acid functionalized poly(ehtylene glycol) (PEG-DHLA), and characterized the dispersibility and optical properties of these QDs in an environment mimicking physiological condition. Dynamic light scattering_(DLS) and spectroscopic analysis confirmed that the modified QDs were uniformly dispersed in saline and albumin buffers while retaining their optical properties. These findings demonstrate that quantum dots are promising nanomaterials with stability and optical properties for biosensors applications.
