Abstract

In this study, a flame-retardant and intumescent coating was developed using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the binder, incorporating ammonium polyphosphate (APP), melamine, and a phytic acid–copper (PA-Cu) complex as key additives. PDMS was chosen for its thermal stability and flexibility. PA-Cu contributed to flame retardancy via phosphorus content and offered potential antimicrobial and thermal stabilization effects through copper ions. The coating was prepared by dispersing PA-Cu in water, blending with PDMS and curing agent, followed by addition of APP, melamine, and surfactants to improve foam stability. Homogenization was used to generate a foamed coating, which was applied to steel substrates and thermally cured. This work demonstrates that combining PDMS with APP, melamine, and PA-Cu provides a promising halogen-free strategy for developing high-performance flame-retardant coatings suitable for industrial and construction applications.
