Abstract

Mechano-responsive visualization materials possess significant application potential not only in stress sensing but also in self-reporting of material damage. Unlike conventional phosphorescent or fluorescent technologies, stimuli-responsive materials are gaining attention as active materials that can predict performance degradation and induce performance improvements.  In particular, when applied to buildings and transportation systems, it is expected to play a significant role in preventing major disasters by enabling real-time detection of structural damage and failure without the need for external equipment.
In this study, we developed a continuous process for fabricating mechano-responsive photonic crystal visualization materials into films, and analyzed the optical properties of the resulting films. Photonic crystal materials with elastic and plastic characteristics were developed, and for mass production, synthesis equipment and process technology were established to stably produce approximately 4 liters per batch, equivalent to over 800 grams of dried material. Furthermore, a roll-to-roll continuous process system with crystallization control via a multi melt-shear process was constructed for film formation. The developed material was stably extruded at temperatures between 100–130°C, forming uniform films with a width greater than 100mm. It was confirmed that with repeated melt-shear processing, the intensity of the reflection peak increased and the color became more vivid.
