Enhancement of Oil Resistance in Polyurethane Sealants through Surface Modification of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract

Polysulfide sealants have been widely employed to prevent fuel leakage in aircraft components, owing to their excellent chemical resistance. They exhibit deficient mechanical properties and slow curing rate. These limitations were addressed by enhancing the oil resistance of polyurethane sealants through the addition of surface-treated SiO2. The oil resistance of polyurethane sealants was evaluated by the addition of SiO2. The addition of surface-treated silica to polyurethane sealant improved oil resistance and mechanical properties. These results suggest the development of optimal polyurethane sealant formulations with high strength and enhanced oil resistance for sealing aircraft fuel tank and other demanding applications. This work was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT (RS-2023-00211944), KIAT, the MOTIE (RS-2024-00419236) and the Ministry of Education (RS-2020-NR049575).
