Ring-opening polymerization kinetics and micellization of amphiphilic block copolymers bearing decalactone isomers

Abstract

In this research, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based amphiphilic copolymers were synthesized using two isomeric forms of decalactone, epsilon-decalactone (ε-DL) and delta-decalactone (δ-DL). Copolymerization was carried out under various conditions, with ring-opening of the decalactone monomers catalyzed by 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). The polymerization kinetics in each isomer was investigated considering both enthalpic and entropic factors related to the ring-opening of the monomer. We performed a comparative analysis of the resulting PEG-based copolymers using GPC and NMR to evaluate the efficiency of each isomer in the copolymerization process. Furthermore, to assess the potential of the amphiphilic copolymers as candidates for drug delivery systems (DDS), we micellized representative copolymers and analyzed them using DLS.
